Two testers looking at several rugs.

In add-on to researching hundreds of rugs, nosotros tested dozens of them in our function and homes, and tried out others in an IKEA showroom. Photo: Michael Hession

The original author of this guide was Shannon Palus. Her first place out of higher was a two-bedroom in South Philadelphia, with all linoleum floors. Shannon and her roommate scrambled to make the identify await okay with as little money as possible. She spent those two years putting her anxiety on a lot of cheap rugs. Some were better than others, to put it kindly.

We sifted through editorial reviews and the websites of big-box stores and discount rug sellers, comparing the finer details of most a hundred rugs. We made trips to IKEA and ordered samples of more than two dozen rugs from a variety of retailers to put to a testing console of nine people. For the 2020 update to this guide, Gregory Han called in four new rug styles, re-tested previous picks, and added long-term exam notes to existing picks. Gregory is a writer at Design Milk and the old managing home applied science editor for Apartment Therapy. Gregory has been writing about home pattern and products since 2006 for a multitude of design-focused outlets, including Dwell, Metropolis, and Domino.

Our recommended rugs were the ones our testers idea felt nicest underfoot. While we each had particular style preferences, we agreed that some rugs had patterns and designs that were well-executed—and that others looked similar bad print jobs. A few of our picks held upwards better in stain and cat-claw tests (we put only our favorites through the wringer). In this guide nosotros notation how each fared in our tests, which rooms they will hold upwardly in best, and how much shipping will price when you purchase the carpeting online.

Flatweaves

Three rolled up flatweave rugs

Photo: Michael Hession

Flatweave rugs accept no "pile"—that is, no fibers that stick upward. They're a good option if you're looking for a budget rug to cover a large space or to occupy a high-traffic area. By and large, a decent flatweave won't cost as much as a quality carpeting with pile and will be easier to keep looking nice year in and year out. Flatweaves won't trap as much dirt as rugs with pile, and they're easy to vacuum or wipe down with a clammy cloth. You can even machine-wash some of them, such every bit cotton rag rugs. When they do get stained, most are reversible.

Flat-woven rugs work all-time in kitchens or dining rooms (they're easy to scoot chairs around on), or in playrooms (they provide a solid foundation for a tower of blocks). The softer ones can piece of work in bedrooms, too. Consider starting with a flatweave as a base and calculation a few smaller high-pile or shag rugs to make the room feel cozier.

Using a thick rug pad can make a big deviation with these rugs, transforming them from something that feels most appropriate in a kitchen to a rug that is cushioned enough to put in a sleeping accommodation. With a thick rug pad, a flat-woven rug will feel springy underfoot and soften the event of a rough surface. (Plus, it will provide a gentler landing pad for kids to fall downwards on.) On bare floor or over a thin antislip lining, your feet volition feel every bump in the carpeting's structure.

If you don't use a pad, a flatweave tin slip and prove hazardous. This type of rug also won't hide a bad stain as well equally a higher-pile rug.

Our pick

Safavieh Rag Rug

Best for: kitchen, dining room

Why it's nifty: Rag rugs rank amongst the best choices for a kitchen, because they're car washable, and due to their rustic appearance they still await okay with a bit of wear and tear, similar some loose yarns or worn spots. We like Safavieh's hand-woven rag rugs, which cost less than well-nigh other rag rugs we've seen, feel comfortable to walk on, and come up in a broad range of colors and sizes. The blueprint, consisting of variegated yarns (or rags), means that most minor stains volition simply alloy in. This carpeting is easy to flip over or toss in the wash—although the larger 8-by-ten versions may require a trip to the laundromat to use their large-capacity washers. At to the lowest degree, if you really ruin it, it'south inexpensive to replace (it's the least expensive of the kitchen options we looked at). One of our editors has had the multicolor version of this carpeting since 2015, and it's holding up well—just a few of the yarns have pulled out slightly. And the white one has held upwards well in a kitchen through a couple of years of testing; Shannon tosses hers in the launder every couple of weeks to go along the color nice. You can sometimes find Safavieh's area rugs for better prices on Amazon, though the selection is a chip scattershot. A more unconventional version with a white speckled middle and a bold edge in colors from grey to hot pink is available at Target and Walmart.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: While soft, this rug is a picayune thinner and bumpier underfoot than many flatweaves—get a thick rug pad to go with it. This rug as well may compress slightly afterwards washing; ane editor constitute that her runner shrank a few inches in length (even with air-drying), then keep shrinkage in mind when ordering the size to fit your space. Another editor constitute that his rug warped in shape nether the weight of an office chair rolling effectually, every bit well every bit the wear and tear of a true cat clawing at it—unsurprising given that the weave of the rug is on the looser side.

Hook & Loom Flatweave Eco Cotton Rug

Best for: dining room, living room, bedroom, kitchen, kids room, bedroom

Why it's great: Our testers named these flatweave rugs as a favorite for their interesting designs. They come in a vast array of colors and patterns (solid, striped, geometric), offering the most variety nosotros've seen in a single line. Though their experience is far from the costly texture of a rug with pile, these rugs are softer than most flatweaves nosotros've tested. To our testers, the weave was tighter and felt less bumpy underfoot than that of the multicolored rag rug we tried.

We call back these flatweaves volition resist signs of wear and tear. After existence tested since 2016, they've held upwards well in a kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping room, and they testify dirt less than the other polyester-cotton blend competition (as Lisa Wagner writes on Rug Chick, polyester rugs love grabbing grime and pet hair). The pocket-sized geometric patterns institute in these rugs do a good job of masking marks and stains, equally Jessica Probus, writer of Home Decor Cheat Sheets: Need-to-Know Stuff for Stylish Living, told usa. Yous can automobile wash them, so they're not bad for a location where they are probable to get spilled on (think kitchen or dining room), though you'll need to take larger sizes to a laundromat.

5 flatweave rugs stack on top of one another.

We similar the wide variety of patterns and colors bachelor in Claw & Loom's Flatweave Eco Cotton wool Carpet line. We think they'd look and feel nice in near whatsoever room (especially with a thick carpet pad). Photo: Michael Hession

Flaws but not dealbreakers:. A former staff writer owned one of these rugs and reported that it pilled at first. She complained to the company, and representatives offered her a refund and let her go along the rug. The trouble so disappeared after she moved it from the living room to her bedchamber—a lower-traffic surface area—and washed it a couple of times. Keep in listen that pilling could be an issue.

The Dash & Albert Herringbone Woven Cotton Rug

Our pick

Dash & Albert Herringbone Woven Cotton Rug

Best for: living room, bedroom

Why it's great: Nosotros saw a lot of rugs with patterns that were either also boring or besides loud. The Nuance & Albert Herringbone Woven Cotton Carpeting strikes a Goldilocks-worthy balance between interesting and understated. Colors such as ocean, dove greyness, stone, and coral are neutral all the same more intriguing than your typical cream or navy. The fine herringbone pattern will hide minor marks or stains, to kick. Our testers noted that this carpeting had a slight texture underfoot that felt pleasant, though non equally soft as some of our other favorite flatweaves. One of our editors, who has a young kid and a dog, has used this carpet since 2017 and said: "Information technology's been pretty solid. It gets a lot of wear from beingness in i of the most trafficked areas in the flat, and while in that location are a few snags in places, they don't await bad or specially noticeable. The pattern hides dirt and stains well, and the material is piece of cake to clean."

Flaws simply not dealbreakers: This rug comes in relatively lite colors and has a significant amount of white. We wouldn't recommend it for high-traffic areas, or rooms where kids and pets will track dirt or consume nutrient. It's as well pricier than most of the rugs nosotros tested for this guide. When we put this carpet through the washer and dryer—Dash & Albert recommends hand washing or professional person cleaning—it shrank by 10% in surface area, on a par with the other rugs we cleaned this mode. Like most flatweave rugs, we recommend getting a rug pad to avoid any slipping.

Our selection

Safavieh Ramona Rug

Safavieh Ramona Rug

A soft, reversible flatweave

This subtly sophisticated patterned rug is comfier underfoot than most flatweaves and is less expensive than many of the other rugs we looked at. The loose weave may not work well in a house with cats, nor hold up as well over time.

Best for: living room, bedroom

Why information technology'due south great: We dearest how the Safavieh Ramona Rug feels softer than the other flatweaves nosotros tested while still being easier to vacuum than a rug with pile. It's a expert choice for a bedchamber, or anywhere you might walk with bare feet. The diamond pattern is subtle yet interesting, and in our tests the olive version even distracted from dirt and a wine spill (we tested information technology out at a party) that wasn't cleaned up efficiently.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The threads would be like shooting fish in a barrel for a true cat to pull at; one tester commented that the threads were so loose, they felt like they might come apart. And afterward using our test rug since 2017, i of our staffers indeed establish that some threads had pulled out, thanks to her domestic dog running laps on it. Plus, some of the colors expect a fiddling dated. When we put the Ramona through the washer and dryer, it shrank nigh the same amount as the other rugs we cleaned.

Sizes: 2′vi″ by iv′, 2′3″ past 7′, 3′ by v′, four′ past 4′, 4′ by six′, 6′ past 6′, 5′ by 8′, ii′3″ by seven′, 8′ by 10′, 9′ by 12′

IKEA Stockholm

IKEA Stockholm

The best inexpensive wool rug

This is the softest, nicest-looking large wool carpeting nosotros've found for around $300. It comes in four patterns, and the blackness-and-white-striped version is a favorite of design blogs.

Buying Options

*At the time of publishing, the price was $300 .

*For more sizes and colors visit ikea.com, $200 to $300

Why information technology's great: Of the budget rugs we looked at, the IKEA Stockholm was one of the few we liked that consisted largely of wool (it has cotton warp and weft and a wool surface). We tried this rug in an IKEA showroom, and it was the only flatwoven rug there that nosotros really liked in our under-$500 toll category for a large carpeting. Information technology has a great price for a wool carpet, and it'southward softer than the other budget wool rugs we put our hands on. Of the five patterns it comes in, we've near often seen the black-and-white-striped Stockholm pop up on design blogs. This particular pattern suits a range of decorating styles, as noted on Apartment Therapy: "It gives formal antiquarian-filled rooms some dial and brightness. It serves as a neutral backdrop for more than modern rooms." If yous live close to an IKEA store, you might desire to pick up this carpet in person.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The wool volition shed at commencement (which is normal), so you'll need to vacuum it regularly. The striped version we examined in an IKEA showroom looked a trivial muddy from human foot traffic. We'd think twice earlier putting the black-and-white version in a dwelling with lots of human foot traffic from kids (or even a home where you don't take a no-shoes-inside policy). It also feels rougher than our other favorite flatweaves.

The Safavieh Juliette Rug

Photograph: Michael Hession

Our pick

Safavieh Juliette Rug

Best for: living room, sleeping accommodation

Why it's not bad: The Safavieh Juliette Carpeting is a prissy alternative to the IKEA Stockholm. Testers liked the soft feel—it'southward softer than the Stockholm—and information technology'south bachelor in more than sizes. Since information technology's made of cotton wool, it tin can become in the wash.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Even though this carpet is all-cotton, nosotros sucked up a significant amount of fiber the get-go several times we vacuumed information technology. The stripes are smaller than those on the Stockholm, lending the rug a beachier look. The white areas make this carpet more prone to stains and looking dirty. The sizes aren't consistently available in every colour. Like all cotton fiber rugs, this one will shrink slightly if you put it through the dryer.

Burrow Cape House Rug

Burrow Cape House Carpeting

Neutral and mod

This 100% recycled polyester flatweave rug, with its neutral all the same gimmicky modern design, should adjust to most decor and nearly whatsoever room setting. Plus, it is durable, comfortable, and easy to clean.

Best for: living room, bedroom, office

Why information technology's peachy: If you're looking for an area rug with a contemporary, yet neutral pattern that whispers hygge—cozy, comfortable, warm and welcoming—the Burrow Cape Business firm carpet is a solid choice on looks lone. Its heathered chevron pattern is subtle like a well-loved sweater. The tightly woven carpet also impressed us with its ability to withstand the stress of stretching cat claws despite its prominent loops, and a couple of "I don't remember the cat eating that!" cleanup incidents, living upwardly to its advertisement every bit a low-maintenance and easy-to-make clean floor covering. And unlike some rugs made with polyester, the overall texture was neither likewise slick or silky, a credit to its chunky weave.

The Burrow Cape House Rug

Photo: Burrow

Flaws but non dealbreakers: Similar most flatweave rugs, the Cape House carpet performs best when paired with a rug pad underneath to avoid sliding around. Burrow as well sells their own rug pad, which you tin can add to your club when selecting your carpeting size.

Depression pile

Closeup of the texture of two low pile rugs.

Photo: Michael Hession

Low-pile rugs have yarns that normally extend up to 1-quarter of an inch from the carpeting's backing. The surface is flat and supportive but as well provides more cushioning than a flatweave carpeting. They're swell for dining rooms since you can scoot chairs around on them, but bare anxiety volition also have a nice surface to rest on. Low-pile rugs work well in kids rooms, since they're soft enough for kids to curl effectually on and are by and large easier to clean than college-pile rugs. (Depression-pile rugs are unremarkably establish in schools.) These rugs will also do good from a thick carpeting pad.

a ruggable rug in a living room setting

Our pick

Ruggable Quadra Teal Rug

Best for: chamber, living room, office, kitchen

Why information technology's slap-up: Ruggable rugs are unlike any other option we tested, offering a two-piece design that combines the appearance of a traditional floor carpet with some of the feel and function of carpet tiles. The Quadra Teal design we tested is Ruggable'south master type of rug, which they call a chenille rug. Information technology comes in many colour and blueprint options. These rugs are only an ⅛-inch thick (thinner than most depression-pile rugs), so the unabridged rug can more easily be thrown into the average-size washing machine. This system consists of a carpet pad and a carpet cover (the "cover" is the actual rug), which is non unlike the setup we recommend for nearly of our picks, simply with Ruggable rugs the pad is not optional. The carpet pad is ⅛-inch thick and made of polyester and thermoplastic prophylactic, similar to a yoga mat. The thin h2o-resistant rug cover, made of polyester, attaches securely to the pad.

The result is a low-pile carpeting that looks and feels more similar carpet tiles—house, but comfortable—than something we'd telephone call cozy. Nonetheless, for loftier-traffic spaces where the everyday thrills of spills are a reality of life, Ruggable's design makes a strong argument for compromising a piddling comfort for difficult wearing convenience. Our smaller 3-past-5-foot sample too proved to exist a pretty good workout mat, sufficiently cushioned and nonslip for cardio, and never exhibiting whatever pilling. We also tested i of their shag rugs, which we were not a large fan of (more info in our Competition section).

A closeup of a Ruggable area rug

Photo: Ruggable

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The rug lays flat well-nigh immediately upon unrolling, just one side remained curled every so slightly before nosotros used a kettlebell to printing the stubborn corners into identify. The rug tin sound a little squeaky equally it acclimates to a space, simply the sound fades with time and employ as the pad compresses.

Sizes: 2.5′ past 7′, 2.5′ by 10′, 3′ by v′, 5′ by 7′, half-dozen′ by ix′, eight′ by x′, 9′ by 12′, 6′ round, 8′ circular

Materials: polyester with a polyurethane water-resistant barrier, thermoplastic condom pad

Aircraft: complimentary (excluding Hawaii, Alaska, and the US territories)

Lowe's Pebble Path Carpet Tile

Our pick

Lowe's Pebble Path Carpet Tile

Best for: kitchen, dining room, kids room

Why it'southward not bad: If y'all demand to embrace ugly flooring—say, linoleum in your living room—on a bare-bones upkeep, these Lowe's indoor/outdoor rug tiles are a smashing option. They cost less per square foot than any other rug we tested and are similar to the popular Flor tiles (though non as pattern conscious, they cost only a 5th of the price). You can easily install them in any configuration, thanks to peel-and-stick backing. Though they are thinner than Flor'due south indoor/outdoor offerings, the texture is comparable: rough, but besides a little cushy underfoot. The tiles are peachy for an area that sees high traffic from blow-prone kids or pets—if you lot harm a tile, you can simply remove and replace it. The adhesive should be easy to wipe off the floor with a cleaning solution (your mileage may vary depending on the surface you lot're adhering to).

Flaws but not dealbreakers: These tiles look and experience industrial—like something y'all'd find in an office building or an elementary school. They won't add the same unifying coziness to a room that other rugs will, and of everything nosotros're recommending hither, they're the roughest. Because they are tiles, they don't have the finished edge near rugs do and will look best covering a space wall-to-wall. We'd hesitate to use these in a bedroom or living room.

Sizes: The square-pes-size tiles (which you can cut smaller for fine-tuning) permit yous to make this rug whatever size you want information technology to be.

Colors: black, oatmeal, chestnut, bounding main blue, denim, taupe, ivory, olive, mocha, heaven greyness

Persian Area Rugs 3028 Moroccan Trellis Area Rug

Our pick

Persian Area Rugs 3028 Moroccan Trellis Area Rug

Best for: living room, bedroom

Why it's corking: Of all the lower-budget options we tested, the Persian Area Rugs 3028 Moroccan Trellis Area Rug was our favorite. At but a few cents more per square foot than the Lowe'south tiles, it's the 2nd-cheapest rug that we like—and information technology'southward softer than other rugs at a similar toll. It will make a living room or bedroom instantly look more homey and cozy without costing you a lot. It'due south slightly cushy but not pillow comfortable. Nosotros establish that cat barf was piece of cake to make clean off the light-gray version. Amazon reviewers concur that it's a good buy: "What an incredible rug for the cost," writes one. "It'south dainty and fluffy and the colour is exactly as advertised." After some new testing in 2020, Gregory found that it was the platonic rug to practice workouts on while quarantining at domicile, since shedding was almost nonexistent. Like our original testers, he too found it was one of the easiest rugs to make clean while taking intendance of a sick cat at home.

Comparison of new and 6 month old rug.

Although very soft and affordable, this polypropylene rug may fade and wait a piffling flattened quickly. Shown here is the rug our writer endemic for six months (left) versus a new one (though some of the color difference may be due to variation betwixt private rugs). Photograph: Michael Hession

Flaws but non dealbreakers: Subsequently using the light-gray version in a living room for v months, nosotros found that information technology needed regular vacuuming to look squeamish, and that fifty-fifty small night stains stood out. Co-ordinate to rug cleaner Lisa Wagner, this tends to be a problem with low-pile polypropylene rugs.

An IKEA Hovslund rug and a white table and chair set

Our pick

IKEA Hovslund

IKEA Hovslund

An easy-to-clean, neutral option

This nylon rug is easier to wipe make clean and less prone to staining than some depression-pile rugs. The neutral color and white trellis pattern tin can provide a overnice backdrop for more dramatic room decorations.

Ownership Options

$130* from IKEA

*At the time of publishing, the toll was $100 .

All-time for: living room, bedroom, kids room

Why it's great: The pattern on IKEA's Hovslund looks like to that of the Persian Area Rugs 3028 Moroccan Trellis, simply it'south easier to clean and not as prone to stains. It is, however, also not as soft. Gray is a peachy neutral color for a carpeting, co-ordinate to design experts we spoke to: It hides dirt and is a little more interesting than khaki or white. The white pattern on the Hovslund adds a bit of dimension, as well, without commanding as well much attending.

A closeup of an IKEA Hovslund rug

Photograph: IKEA

Flaws merely not dealbreakers: Although the white lines will show a stain more easily than the gray, they are sparse, and then a stain or a modest color change from clay won't stand up out as easily as it would on a rug with more than white surface area. The super-low pile is made of nylon—which makes this carpeting easy to wipe down with a cloth.

Sizes: 6′7″ by 9'10″ and 2′7″ by 6′7″

Materials: 100% polypropylene, constructed rubber backing

Colors: dark grey with cream lattice blueprint

Aircraft: $10 to $100, depending on location

Higher pile

A high pile rug.

Photo: Michael Hession

Consider rugs with higher pile for areas of your dwelling where you want a more comfortable surface, such as a sleeping accommodation, a living room, or an area where babies and kids might crawl around. Rugs with fibers longer than a quarter inch are considered medium pile, while those over a half inch are high pile; those taller than three-quarters of an inch are considered plush or shag. The college the pile, the cushier and softer a rug will be—and the harder to make clean.

Shag rugs, in particular, can make a room feel cozy, interior designer and writer Jessica Probus noted. But they're also great at trapping clay—of all the budget rugs, they can hang on to crumbs, sand, and hair the well-nigh. According to carpet cleaner Lisa Wagner, polypropylene tends to attract oil more than a material like wool. These rugs as well require regular steam cleaning to continue them looking decent.

We similar these rugs best in modest doses: at the foot of a piece of furniture to back up bare feet, for example, or as an emphasis rug in a playroom to create a soft spot where kids tin lie down with a book.

Though loftier-pile and shag rugs are straightforward stylewise, we wouldn't purchase one ourselves online unless we had seen and felt it in person first, or had a proficient recommendation for one. The majority of these rugs that we put our hands and anxiety on had dry, scratchy polypropylene fibers, a design that spaced the fibers likewise thinly and fabricated the carpet feel flat rather than plush, or both.

Our pick

Safavieh Milan Shag

All-time for: chamber, kids room

Why it'south great: The Safavieh Milan Shag feels amazing underfoot: "SO Plush!" wrote one of our testers. Of the 6 shag rugs we tested, this carpet was ane of our favorite budget shags. Unlike on the other shag rugs we tried out, the fibers are both close together and soft, non dry out.

Flaws but not dealbreakers: The fibers are long—ii inches—and particularly prone to trapping dirt. Even after our vacuum test, this rug held on to a lot of quinoa from our "clay" test. This shag rug is neat for the cost, only if you think you want something extra soft and plush, consider the Hay Raw rug, a more than luxurious (but expensive) shag option. If yous're not sure, consider ordering a small size to test it out first.

Sizes: 2′ by 4′, two′ by vi′, two′ by 8′, 2′ by x′, 2' by 12', two' x 14', 3′ past five′, 5′1″ foursquare, iv′ by half dozen′, 5′1″ by 8′, half dozen′ by ix′, 8′ by 10′, eight′6″ by 12′, 10′ by 14′, 7′ round, 5′1″ circular

Hay Raw Rug

Hay Raw Carpet

A luxuriously plush choice

Minimalist in design, maximalist in feel, this tufted wool carpeting warms up any room with its toe-curling soft texture and the richness of its dyes while as well being surprisingly easy to make clean.

Best for: chamber, living room, kids room

Why information technology's great: Hay's Raw Rug is plush and cloud soft, the type of area rug we imagine most people want in rooms where condolement and warmth are paramount. Of all the rugs we tested, this carpeting offered the most supple and pleasant feeling to walk on. It would work bang-up nigh a bed or in a living room where kids can play around. The carpeting is fabricated of 100% wool with a cotton bankroll. It's and so soft and plush that anyone walking on information technology—including our cats—leaves an imprint for a few minutes before the wool springs back to shape. Nosotros didn't notice whatsoever unpleasant off-gassing, and it was fairly easy to clean with just some water and wool-friendly detergent.

Hay Raw Rug

Photo: Hay

Flaws but not dealbreakers: Everything we similar well-nigh this plush, soft carpet may be a drawback in high-traffic situations. It will pill and is probably all-time in "no shoes inside" households. When placed in a domicile office with two office chairs, the rug did shed significantly. We also found that information technology pilled when nosotros did some high-intensity workouts on them. Also, considering of its deeper pile, yous'll demand a powerful vacuum to become dirt out from its depths.

Rugs tin cost a lot. At the farthermost, a fine Western farsi rug could cost tens of thousands. But even at stores like Crate and Barrel and Westward Elm, you can easily pay more than a thousand dollars for a large carpet. A hand-constructed rug made of wool, rug cleaner Lisa Wagner told us, could hands be $20 per square human foot—and sometimes much more—with bargain prices for used wool rugs hovering effectually $10 per square pes. That's the kind of carpeting you lot'll go along for decades, shelling out fifty-fifty more money in between for people like Wagner to work their magic and make it look like new over again.

The rugs we encompass in this guide aren't that expensive and are all bachelor for purchase online. Nosotros capped the price at virtually $four per foursquare pes (though nosotros made a few exceptions). This means that most of the rugs nosotros recommend tin be had in an 8-by-x-foot size for not much more than $300 (plus shipping) with simply a few in the $400 and $500 range. "Inexpensive rugs have a purpose and use, just like cheap piece of furniture does," Wagner said. They tin look great—sometimes actually neat—for a few years. Maybe more than if you're careful. But fifty-fifty the best rugs in this form won't terminal more than than a decade in a high-traffic area in your home, or if you have kids and pets and the inevitable messes that come with them. These rugs are good choices as long as you know that when you're making the buy, they can be useful and look great for the fourth dimension that you accept them. Recall, though, that rebuying an inexpensive carpeting every few years adds upward. Inexpensive materials can crave steam cleanings a couple of times a year to look good.

Two testers look at a variety of rugs

We sifted through hundreds of rugs on disbelieve home-decorating sites like Wayfair and Overstock, besides as on Amazon. We checked out the offerings from retailers such equally Crate and Barrel, Pier 1 Imports, Target, Walmart, and West Elm, too. All the same per the advice of 2nd-generation rug cleaner Lisa Wagner, we remained skeptical of the price of rugs from big-box stores, because such rugs are often made of the same materials as much cheaper counterparts on disbelieve sites.

  • Materials: We mostly looked at rugs made of nylon, cotton fiber, wool, polypropylene, polyester, and blends thereof. Polypropylene rugs won't last as long, simply they're less expensive than rugs made from other materials.
  • Weave: Nosotros considered flat-woven, low-pile, and higher-pile rugs. Flatweaves are swell for high-traffic areas considering they're relatively smooth and easy to make clean. Rugs with pile—or fibers sticking up out of the rug's backing—are generally more padded and better for living areas and bedrooms. Our picks skew toward flatwoven rugs because they tend to be less expensive.
  • Size: We heard again and again that a primary carpet for a room should be large—large enough for all the piece of furniture in a room to at to the lowest degree partially sit down on, according to interior designer and writer Jessica Probus. So nosotros looked for rugs that were available in large sizes but yet affordable.
  • Price: We loosely capped carpet prices in our search at $500 for an eight-by-10-foot carpeting (but almost of our picks fall in the $300 to $400 range). We didn't notice a huge difference in materials amongst rugs at that price and many of the offerings that price twice as much, which included blends of nylon, cotton, and rayon. Nosotros cruel in dearest with a couple of rugs that were a footling pricier, merely you tin lodge swatches of those rugs online for a few dollars to confirm that you like their wait and experience before committing.
  • Blueprint: Experts we spoke to advised going with a more neutral rug equally a base layer and so adding smaller accent rugs on top—the mode you'd add together a colorful throw pillow to a plain couch, Probus explained. Nosotros more often than not steered away from rugs that came in only a bold, distinctive design that would piece of work for very specific tastes. Instead nosotros favored rugs available in pocket-sized sizes in bold colors, equally well as larger sizes in neutral colors.

We called in rugs with a variety of designs and pile heights for testing. We looked specifically for rugs that came in multiple color or design choices. Photo: Michael Hession

Nosotros originally called in samples of 38 rugs, all of which had positive owner reviews or came from a major retailer whose offerings we were interested in putting to the examination. Nosotros were able to eliminate a couple of contenders immediately: i rug that felt more like a dish towel, and some other that looked like a thin, faded ghost of a Persian rug. We set the rest up in the Wirecutter function in New York City and had nine testers walk around on them and requite usa their thoughts on the experience and design of each carpeting. For the Oct 2020 update to this guide nosotros called in four new rug styles, which our writer Gregory tested in his own L.A. home due to the pandemic. In the time to come, nosotros plan to bring these new rugs into the office to get more feedback.

Later on that, we did a vacuum examination. We made a mixture of dry quinoa, cinnamon, and crumbled toast that mimic common messes and are easily stuck in fibers, and and so sprinkled it over a pick of the rugs of different pile heights. The primary thing nosotros learned from this examination was: Don't spill dry quinoa on your flooring. It was a huge pain to vacuum up off every kind of surface.

Vacuum running across the rugs we tested.

The rugs we tested cleaned upward pretty well with a vacuum, but quinoa was surprisingly difficult to pull up from all of them. Photograph: Michael Hession

We also stained swatches of several rugs with wine and chocolate water ice cream to see how easy they were to make clean off. Finally, we let a cat roll around on several samples of rugs. Egged on by catnip and treats, he pawed at the rugs; we observed which ones held up to his claws. In 2020, our rugs were stress-tested by Gregory's ii senior cats in his abode that provided enough of messes to clean upwardly.

You can easily exercise these tests at dwelling yourself. Many sites sell carpeting swatches for $i to $25. If y'all're ownership from a retailer similar Amazon or Wayfair, rugs oftentimes (though not always) come in a pocket-sized size, such as a 3-by-5-human foot version. We strongly recommend ordering swatches and samples of your elevation few choices, putting them to a pes test, and letting your pets hang out on them. (Ultimately, our vacuum and stain tests were less useful.) Rugs often look different in person than they do online and feel unlike than you lot might think—usually, in our experience, rougher. An lxxx-square-foot carpet is a hassle to render if you're not satisfied with information technology when it shows upwardly. (Keep in heed: On the smaller versions of rugs, nosotros found that the pattern could sometimes be on a slightly different calibration.)

Some rugs have a rubberized nonskid backing, in which case you may not need a rug pad. Just if you practise need ane, a thick rug pad volition help go along your rug firmly in identify, protect floors and the carpeting itself from excessive wear and tear, and also provide more cushion underfoot.

The pad should be smaller than your area rug past 1 to 2 inches on all sides, and so that the edges of the rug lie apartment against the floor and don't get a tripping risk. This also reduces wear and keeps the pad subconscious. If yous have a good-quality pad, yous should not demand whatsoever additional adhesives to concord it in place.

If you want your rugs to function well and expect neat for equally long as possible, make certain that you're getting the right blazon of rug for each space. You lot'll demand sturdier rugs for a high-traffic entryway or kitchen, but yous may want something plusher for a chamber. Here'due south a breakdown of the all-time types of rugs for each room.

Kitchen: Having a rug to stand on while you chop veggies or wash dishes tin be more pleasant for your feet than common cold tile. Plus, the rug tin can add unexpected color and texture to the floor. A kitchen rug should exist piece of cake to clean (or so cheap that yous can toss it after a nasty spill) and prissy to stand on for long periods of time. That means flatweave or low-pile, and made out of materials that you lot can wipe down (nylon or polypropylene) or fifty-fifty throw in the launder (cotton wool). Indoor/outdoor rugs are generally a good choice, since they can take some corruption. Small rugs or runners work well in this room—identify a runner along the floor side by side to a counter. If you practise a lot of standing in your kitchen and don't care so much about having a brightly colored carpet, y'all can besides purchase a standing mat. We use this one in the Wirecutter test kitchen, and nosotros recommend it in our guide to standing desk-bound mats.

Dining room: A rug will make the dining infinite feel grounded and keep chairs from scraping the floor. If you have small kids (or are just spill-prone), invest in a dining-area carpeting that's easy to clean. Your dining room carpet should exist a flatweave or low-pile rug so that you can move chairs effectually easily. Pick something with a small pattern to help mask lilliputian stains.

Bedroom: If you're going to spend more coin on a rug, make it the one that goes hither. A bedroom rug should make the space experience comfy and feel peachy underfoot. It volition go less wear and tear from high traffic than rugs in other rooms of your business firm. Buy smaller rugs to get around your bed so that you don't spend coin on square feet of rug that yous'll never see underneath your bed.

Living room: A rug in your living room can aid define a space to hang out in. Living room rugs can be a little rougher than rugs for the bedroom, as you're non likely to spend as much fourth dimension here with bare feet. (If you have a no-shoes policy at your firm, all the same, you lot can get away with spending more money on something soft, as it volition exist subjected to less dirt and therefore terminal longer.) Flatweaves, low-pile rugs, and higher-pile rugs can work in living rooms. If you tin can't beget to cover the space between all of your furniture, consider multiple rugs arranged to unite specific areas where conversation happens.

Kids room: A colorful rug is a quick fashion to brand a kid's room feel fun and magical—you can get away with colors and prints that would wait as well zany in whatever other room of the house. Consider a plush high-pile rug adjacent to the bed or a reading chair to create a soft surface to curl upwards on, and a depression-pile or flatweave next to a play area.

Before you start looking for a rug, figure out what size you lot demand—that will help narrow down your options right off the bat. Mark the boundaries of where you'd like to put the rug with masking tape, every bit Apartment Therapy suggests, and measure the altitude between them.

Where should those edges be? Ideally, a carpet should go under all of the piece of furniture in a room, with a few feet to spare if it'due south not confronting a wall, said Jessica Probus, author of Home Decor Cheat Sheets: Need-to-Know Stuff for Stylish Living. This arrangement makes the room wait more unified and grounded. Simply if you can't afford to embrace that much space, Probus'southward general advice is to purchase a rug that's big enough to fit partially under every piece of article of furniture. (If you purchase an accent carpeting, make sure it's wide enough to fit nether the front legs of at least one piece of furniture.)

Ideally, a living room carpeting should be big enough for all the article of furniture to fit on it with room to spare. Illustrations from Abode Decor Cheat Sheets (written by Jessica Probus and illustrated by Alice Mongkongllite) reprinted with permission from Ulysses Press

If y'all're brusque on money, you lot can get away with smaller surface area rugs. In the chamber, having a rug "wherever your feet are going to go is ideal," Probus said. Plus, it can experience like a waste material of money to have a carpeting that covers the area under the bed. Her solution is to put smaller rugs on either side of the bed (if the space is tight, a runner works well).

In a dining room, a rug should be big enough for all the chairs to fit on it when they are pulled out, with at least a little room to spare then the legs don't catch on the edge. Measure the length of one of your chairs—that's the minimum altitude from your tabular array that your rug should extend. Nigh 2 feet is a good minimum, though Probus said that ideally it should be more like 4 feet. If you're buying a cotton rug, go along in mind that it might shrink in the wash: Purchase it slightly bigger than it needs to be.

Nevertheless, a rug shouldn't be too big: Jessica Romm Perez and Shani Silver write in Domino: Your Guide to a Stylish Dwelling house that a big carpet should all the same be at least a pes away from the wall—ideally 2 feet. Otherwise, the room will look a trivial sloppy.

In our research and testing, we've found at that place are trade-offs to rugs made of natural and constructed fibers. Some are easier to make clean and some may await amend for longer, while others are much more than affordable. Hither'south a breakup of the materials you lot'll most often find in upkeep area rugs.

Natural fibers

If y'all are seeking an inexpensive rug that you tin can buy online, cotton is the primary natural material that y'all'll be looking at, because it is affordable and tin work in a variety of rooms. Though nosotros've seen rugs fabricated of other found-based fibers in offices and living rooms in photos and showrooms—and we know at least ane person who uses a jute carpet in their bedchamber—we've found that such rugs by and large don't piece of work too in those rooms considering they aren't as soft underfoot. If y'all are considering a natural-fiber rug for one of those rooms, endeavor to feel it in person before you buy, if at all possible. If you lot buy one, rug cleaner and blogger Lisa Wagner suggests treating information technology with a fiber protector.

Cotton: Typically used for flatweaves, cotton wool is a dainty fabric for rugs because it is soft underfoot and can become in the wash. (Beware of shrinkage, though, when you are choosing a size.)

Seagrass: Like sisal, seagrass is durable. Different sisal, information technology doesn't hold on to stains easily—or dye, which means that it comes merely in its natural light green or khaki colour.

Jute: This material is made from the jute institute, primarily grown in Asia. The fibers aren't that strong—then they autumn apart relatively easily—and they're often woven into a thick, bumpy rug. We skipped jute rugs in our testing, just if you like the rustic look, they tin can work in a kitchen.

Wool: High-end wool comes from sheep in New Zealand or the Himalayas, and is strong enough to last for years and years with occasional professional person carpet cleaning. Be conscientious, though, well-nigh buying an inexpensive wool rug that'southward gone through a lot of chemical processing, Lisa Wagner told u.s., as it can "shed horribly." As a full general dominion of pollex, Wagner said, you should stay abroad from tufted wool rugs, oft fabricated in India. "These will be rugs that have textile roofing upwards the back because they are glued together," she explained, and in addition to that shortcut, they are often composed of lower-quality wool. One of our picks, the Hay Raw Carpeting, is fabricated of tufted wool, and while information technology does shed, we think information technology'southward an acceptable amount, just we note it'south ameliorate suited for depression traffic areas.

Viscose/rayon (also called bamboo silk, banana silk, or man-fabricated silk): These materials are made from waste material fibers from cotton and wood pulp. They can wait pretty when brand-new, but Wagner suggested that we stay away from them: "They are probable to shed, vesture, yellowish, and permanently stain with very light use." Wagner told u.s.a. that a customer of hers ordered a few swatches of viscose rugs to encounter how they would hold upwards around her pets. She spilled red wine on them, also. "The designer told her these viscose samples were ideal for her family room," Wagner said. But "she is discovering that NONE are holding upward." Nosotros decided to skip testing these materials ourselves.

Synthetic fibers

Constructed fibers can be fairly stain resistant but will become more hands physically damaged past vesture and tear than their natural counterparts. Wagner compared them to plastic Tupperware: Though they can be discolored, in general "you can pour in strong-staining items and it does non discolor the plastic permanently," she said. But just as Tupperware can be scratched and look cloudy, synthetic rugs can go smushed and trap dirt. That means you'll need to supervene upon them every few years or so. As with wall-to-wall rug, you can steam-make clean them to go on them looking nice in the meantime.

Nylon: Wagner told us she recommended this kind of fiber for cheap rugs. It's easy to clean, and it will hold upwardly relatively well to wear and tear compared with other options, though it will cost a footling more.

Polypropylene (also known as olefin): Not every bit durable equally nylon, according to Wagner, but cheaper. "Most commercial office carpet is olefin, and so this is why in the areas with roller part chairs and in the entry you see shadowing and it wears downwardly," she said. Information technology's worth your coin if you are okay with tossing a rug later on a couple of years, though.

Polyester: Like to polypropylene, this material is fairly stain resistant only in higher-pile rugs it smushes easily. We found that it can sometimes lend rugs a slick or silky experience.

The color and pattern of a large rug can significantly touch the mood of your living infinite. Designer Rebecca Atwood told us that dark rugs make a room "feel warm, cozy, and grounded," while light ones volition brand information technology experience airy, and tones in betwixt "hibernate clay, pet hair, and the like all-time, so that'south a good place to first."

Whatever your personal way, you won't become wrong with a neutral-color rug as a solid base for the room. Merely you don't accept to stick to tan, said Atwood, who favors "soft versions of colors similar chroma, mint, gray-lilac, taupe." Jessica Probus suggested gray, navy, or a darker beige. "Neutral" also doesn't hateful "solid." Patterns created with a neutral palette tin be "much more interesting than straightforward two-tone patterns," Atwood said. A texture or small-scale pattern tin can also lessen the visual impact of small stains and marks, Probus said.

If you desire to make your room feel open even with a darker-color carpet, attempt stripes. Horizontal stripes "will brand a space feel longer," Atwood said. Plus, stripes "help depict you into a space," she added.

If you lot spot a bolder pattern that appeals to yous, accept inspiration—just with caution. Design consultant Elana Frankel said many people purchase rugs they run across in magazines, but the designs don't stop up looking quite right in their homes. Instead, Frankel suggested using those bolder styles as a starting point for carpeting shopping. If you love the way a pinkish and orange striped rug looks covering the entire living room flooring in a magazine, for instance, find a similar blueprint in a neutral palette, or purchase a smaller version of the rug that won't command and then much space.

Jessica Probus suggested thinking of bright, colorful rugs as y'all would accent pillows: in that location to add together a petty bit of texture and color, easy to bandy out if you lot get tired of the pattern. An accent carpeting works all-time when it isn't hanging out by itself in the middle of the room. "Have it peeking out under a chair, or under two legs," Probus said.

If you lot actually do call up that mag's pink and orange striped rug would look nifty in your living room, Frankel suggests using construction paper to mock up how the rug will actually look on the floor. Yous can just put downward enough to get an idea of how a section of the room will look.

Utilise your carpeting search equally an opportunity to probe your personal style. "Retrieve almost the pieces you've endemic that accept stuck with you lot the most and create a mood board based on colors, textures, patterns, interiors and photographs that speak to you," Atwood said. "Alive with this a while and come across how it resonates. Then employ this equally your guide for picking pieces for your home."

Fifty-fifty without a mood board, it's prudent to give yourself a couple of days to reverberate before committing to a carpeting. As Atwood recommended: "Just get something that you can't stop thinking nigh! It should pull at your heart."

Although nosotros looked at many more rugs online, the following are the other area rugs we tried in our tests.

Crate and Kids Indoor Outdoor Rug: We previously recommended this rug for its soft feel and assuming but simple design. However, afterward a year of use we found that it collected dirt apace, and the polyester cobweb developed scratchy fuzz.

Crate and Kids Foursquare Indoor/Outdoor Carpet (now discontinued): We liked the expect of this rug's grid blueprint online. In person, the weave seemed loose, and the polyester yarns were thick and crude; our cat's claws easily pulled them.

Crate and Kids Barcode Grey Rug (now discontinued) was a previous flatweave cotton wool rug pick in the guide, but it is no longer available. If we come across it surface once more, nosotros'll update the guide.

Society6 Area Rug: With hundreds of designs ranging from floral prints to octopuses and cats to choose from, nosotros were excited to try ane of Society6's area rugs. However, the rug nosotros ordered felt more similar a dish towel than a rug—and so much so that we didn't even include it in our testing.

Nuance & Albert Marled Woven Cotton Rug: This rug was much rougher underfoot than the competition. We tried information technology out at a political party, where it got an unsalvageable level of dirty (the competitors we brought along survived with more minimal wear and tear).

Safavieh Montauk from Habitation Depot: The fine-grain grid pattern on this rug looked warped and misaligned in person. (Notation that some retailers sometimes refer to other Safavieh rugs as "Montauk"; we are referring to the one with the diamond-and-grid blueprint.)

NuLoom Marrakech Trellis Navy Rug: Nosotros liked the look of the navy colour, equally well equally the simple design, when we saw this rug online. But in person, testers disliked that the white pattern was raised. It looked a little strange and made the rug experience bumpy underfoot.

Mainstays Dylan Nylon Expanse Rug: This rug was thinner than it looked online and reminded united states more of a bath mat than something we'd put in our living rooms.

Hook & Loom Loom-Hooked Eco Cotton fiber Rugs: These rugs are especially comfortable to walk on and come in 35 patterns. Our testers unanimously loved them. Nevertheless, at nearly $700 for an viii-by-eleven-foot carpet, they were as well expensive for inclusion in this guide. And when nosotros had a cat roll around on one, his claws snagged on several of the loops.

Safavieh Hudson Shag Collection: This rug is thicker and fluffier than our favorite shag, the Safavieh Milan Shag. But that makes it even better at hiding dirt. Our testers preferred the way the Milan Shag felt underfoot anyway.

Flor Tiles: These pieces are the aureate standard among carpet tiles. They are sturdy and easy to bandy out if you lot stain ane—making them a cracking choice for a dining room rug. However, because they offset at $10 per square foot, they were out of our price range for this guide. Nosotros call up the Lowe's Pebble Path Carpet Tiles are similar to the industrial Flor options, and they're simply a 5th of the price.

Ruggable Polar White Shag Carpeting: While this shag rug looked promising, underfoot it felt thin and insignificant, like running our toes through a slippery sheepskin rug suffering from a thinning hairline.
